Brush, brush, brush your teeth. Brush them all around. Brush them
high and brush them low. And don’t forget your tongue! (sung to Row, Row,
Row Your Boat).
With February being such a short month, we wanted to squeeze in dental
health this week. We are very fortunate that the military base supports our
efforts to promote dental hygiene. During February the dental clinic visits
classrooms to talk about good dental hygiene and all students get to go home
with a toothbrush and dental floss. Our students even get a quick mouth
check by the dentist to identify any possible problems that might need an
appointment. The younger students have a center in the classroom where they can
brush their teeth after lunch, plus there were lots of activities that helped
us to remember to keep our teeth healthy.
Now that our smiles are nice and bright, we can move into Dr. Seuss
week! Thank goodness for Dr. Seuss. His use of rhymes, nonsense words, and
imaginative characters make it easy to promote reading. Most children are
familiar with Dr. Seuss books and The Cat in the Hat character, so we like to
focus on what an author and what an illustrator does. It is wonderful to see
children make the connection that they are authors and illustrators too. Who
knows, we may have a future children’s book author in our classroom!
