The "luck of the Irish" is probably a saying you've heard time and time again, so are the Irish really lucky? What is luck? What
is more important, luck or hard work? To someone that sees themselves as
"unlucky", I'm sure they would say luck is most important. While
someone that has worked from the ground up, would say that hard work is more
valuable. Instead of seeing the two as luck and hard work, let's look at them
as talent and skill. Talent is something that you're born with while skill is
something that you practice over and over, perfecting. Of course, it's easy to
say that someone is better off with a natural born talent rather than someone
that has to continually practice in order to get anywhere. Let's use the story
that almost everyone has heard before, the tortoise and the hare. The hare had
a natural born ability to be very fast and he was aware of this talent while
the tortoise was made to be very slow and most would believe he had no ability
to compete with the hare.
During
the race, the hare figured his talent of running very quickly, would ensure him
of a first place prize so, he decide to take a nap and not work toward the goal
over a stretch of time but all at once. Meanwhile, the tortoise knew that he
was not very fast and would have to work very hard to even finish the race, let
alone win. The tortoise never gave up and perceived until he got to the finish
line while, the hare over slept and no ability or talent in the world would get
him the end of the race in time. To me, the meaning of this story tells me that
while talent is great and amazing, it's not everything. Talent without hard
work is pointless. You can have the ability to do great things but without hard
work, the talent is useless. Talent is only potential without hard work. Wherever
the phrase 'Luck of the Irish' originates from or what is was
originally intended to mean, the fact is that the Irish
are very lucky people. They are proud of themselves and
their country and culture. They are
hardworking, friendly, and popular with the world.
